Carpenter John McDonald converted a historic railroad facility on Southwest Boulevard into a brewery in 1989, growing it into the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest. Its Smokestack Series, anchored by the Belgian-style Tank 7 saison, put Kansas City on the American craft-beer map.
