Chin Jukan Kiln
Miyama, Hioki, Kagoshima
Chin Jukan Kiln has fired Satsuma ware in Miyama since 1598, when Korean potters brought under the Shimazu clan established the workshop, and the fifteenth generation now runs it using a traditional wood-fired climbing kiln. The kiln produces ivory-glazed pieces with hand-painted Satsuma nishiki-de decoration, sold on site alongside a heritage museum and tea room.
