Kungyokudo has blended incense in front of Nishi Hongan-ji since 1594, when it began as an apothecary selling aromatic wood and medicines. The shop still measures out sticks and kneaded koh by hand from its Kyoto storefront, alongside a small museum on the history of Japanese fragrance.
