Nishino Urushi Kobo
Kiso-Hirasawa, Shiojiri, Nagano, Japan
Nishino Urushi Kobo works out of Kiso-Hirasawa, the lacquer district recognized by Japan's economy ministry as a traditional craft production area, hand-coating chopsticks and small wares with techniques such as sumi-jiro and shunkei finishing. Layers of urushi are built up over a wood or bamboo core and polished by hand rather than sprayed or machine-buffed.
