Rogan Art (Khatri Family)

Padma Shri awardee Abdulgafur Khatri and his family hand-paint boiled-castor-oil pigment onto cloth with a metal stylus in Nirona village, a technique carried through the family for generations after nearly disappearing with industrialization. Their signature Tree of Life motif drew international attention when Prime Minister Modi presented a piece to Barack Obama in 2014, and the craft now carries a Geographical Indication tag for the Kutch region.
