Shironameshi (Shin-Toshi Tannery)
Himeji, Hyogo
Shironameshi is Himeji's white-tanned leather, cured with only salt and rapeseed oil in a method more than a thousand years old and nearly lost until tanner Matomo Nitta revived it at his Shin-Toshi tannery from 2000. The site presents the pale, chemical-free hides and the shoes, bags and garments that designers now build from them.
