Juchheim traces its Japanese roots to Kobe, where German confectioner Karl Juchheim reopened his baumkuchen business in the early 1920s after the Great Kanto Earthquake forced him out of Yokohama. The Motomachi honten still bakes the ring-shaped layered cake he introduced to Japan, alongside seasonal European-style confections.
