Joe and Suzanne Lee opened Joe Lee's after moving to Clear Lake Shores in 1970. He sat on council and served six years as mayor — the city named 12 April 1985 Joe Lee Day — and after he died in 1996 she and the children kept the Marina Bay kitchen.
