Kanazawa Buyer's Guide — Buy Craft That Still Uses Gold
Kanazawa's gold is a material with grades, methods, and jobs. Buy the craft that still uses it. Do not buy the city as a gold-colored photograph.
Ask what the leaf is for
Those are three products: unused sheets, edible leaf, and leaf already applied to an object. Say which one you want. A seller who answers with "Kanazawa gold" has not answered.
At Gold Leaf Sakuda Main Store, 1-3-27 Higashiyama (36.5738494, 136.6663150), the house dates itself to 1919 and says it sells foil as a base material to artists. Ask for sheets or a screen only if you can name the next use. At Imai Kinpaku Main Store, 7-3 Saiwai-cho (36.5537283, 136.6583820), in Kanazawa since 1898, the official English door is a workshop: apply leaf to a bottle, a tumbler, a postcard. If you want unused stock, say so. If you want the hon-ten, do not follow the Hirosaka OSM pin. That pin is the branch at 1-2-36 Hirosaka.
Ask which beating method made the sheet. Hakuza at 1-30-4 Moriyama (36.5775628, 136.6650566) still explains entsuke, the older method its English page ties to national-treasure repair. Machine-cut tachikiri is a different surface. Food-grade leaf is a different hygiene line. Gold Leaf Kanazawa Katani at 6-33 Shimoshin-cho (36.5718288, 136.6627121) separates craft foil from its edible 華ふぶき line on the official site. Use that kind of distinction even when you are standing in another shop. Official "120 years" is a span, not a year.
HAKUICHI Higashiyama Store at 1-15-4 Higashiyama (36.5723093, 136.6664679) is the efficient tourist door of the 1975 house. Use it if you already know the object. Do not let soft serve decide the purchase. Hakuichi and Gold Leaf Sakuda are duplicate slugs, not second houses.
Buy gold already at work
A first object should have a job.
At Gold-Knot, 5-6 Minami-cho (36.5679331, 136.6541718), leaf is fixed to silk or lace near Oyama Shrine. Check the join, the weight, and the clasp. No founding year was fetched. Do not invent one.
At Nosaku Lacquer Ware, 1-1-60 Hirosaka (36.5618260, 136.6562542), gold should be in the maki-e, not on the box. The house dates itself to 1780. Ask whether the piece is Kaga, Wajima, or Yamanaka. A student workshop piece is a student workshop piece.
At Kutani Ware Kutani Kosen Kiln, 5-3-3 Nomachi (36.5543134, 136.6425130), buy from the kiln that opened in 1870 and still throws and paints in the city. Official copy calls it the only Kutani kiln in Kanazawa. A plate without a kiln name is a postcard. Kutani Ceramics HOKUSANDO at 1-2-33 Hirosaka (36.5615767, 136.6588127) is a dealer. Compare artists there. Do not treat the dealer as the kiln. Kutani Kosen Kiln is the duplicate slug.
At Kaga Mizuhiki Tsuda Mizuhiki, 1-1-36 Nomachi (36.5573674, 136.6496311), the fifth-generation cord house still makes ceremonial wrapping and knot jewelry. Gold-colored cord is not gold leaf. Tsuda Mizuhiki is the same door.
Kanazawa Crafts Hirosaka at 1-2-25 Hirosaka (36.5616412, 136.6580113) has compared named Kanazawa makers since 1997. Use the two floors to decide which house deserves the rest of the afternoon.
If you want dye or stitch rather than leaf, Kaga Yuzen Kaikan at 8-8 Koshomachi (36.5639604, 136.6655423) is the official hall: five base colours, artist-seal system. Kaga-nui embroidery IMAI works at 3-4-19 Mikuchishin-machi (36.5444237, 136.6793667), a 1912 line with a 2011 studio. Appointment, not a browse. Kimono Marutoshi inside Omicho Ichibakan, 88 Aokusa-machi (36.5717309, 136.6559877), is for a garment you already need cleaned or fitted.
Food that survives the train
Ame no Tawaraya at 2-4 Kobashimachi (36.5784190, 136.6627074) has made jiro-ame since 1830. The syrup and the harder Okoshi Ame travel. Fresh namagashi does not. Eat Koshiyama Kanseido at 2-11-28 Owari-cho (36.5719424, 136.6600841) in town. Morihachi is now at 10-15 Ote-machi (36.5694481, 136.6639012), not Owari-cho. Founded 1625. Buy a dry rakugan or a packed yokan.
At Fukumitsuya Higashi, 1-14-9 Higashiyama (36.5713757, 136.6668698), buy a bottle size you will finish. The house dates the brewery to 1625. Yachiya Sake Brewery at 8-32 Ohimachi (36.5856128, 136.6757498) is the 加賀鶴 door. No founding year on the official fetch. Do not invent one.
Kintsuba Nakataya Higashiyama Chayagai at 1-5-9 Higashiyama (36.5724950, 136.6660231) has made kintsuba since 1934. Eat it here. The official 東山店 at 3-4-30 is closed. Shijimaya Honpo Main Store at 1-17-28 Yayoi (36.5492556, 136.6471779) packs kabura-zushi and pickles; ask which pieces need cold. Kanbayashi Kanazawa Chaho at 1-7 Shimoshincho (36.5718288, 136.6627121) is tea since 1949. Buy leaf you will brew. The hon-ten cafe is flagged closed on the official store page.
Ohi Chozaemon Kiln / Ohi Museum at 2-17 Hashiba-cho (36.5699032, 136.6643902) is a tea-bowl visit, not a gold stop. Official kanji is 大樋. Record Jungle, Araki Building 2F, 2-13 Fukuro-machi (36.5722923, 136.6577454), is the 1983 record room. Go only if the crate is the point.
Walk away
Walk away when the leaf is only a topping, when entsuke and cut leaf are treated as the same word, when Kutani has no kiln, when a workshop upsell replaces a finished object you actually wanted, and when Kanazawa M'ZA at 15-1 Musashi-machi (36.5719556, 136.6549824) is asked to stand in for a house. The department store is opposite Omicho Market. It is a roof, not a maker.
The gold is working material. Buy the object that still has a use for it.
