Melbourne is best shopped through three networks: central design around Federation Square, print and independent retail in Fitzroy, and coffee as a separate morning whose timing and freshness deserve their own attention.
Melbourne’s retail geography is easier when the day is organised by medium. Museum publishing belongs in the centre, print and independent retail belong in Fitzroy, and serious coffee buying works better as a separate morning near the roaster.
Morning — begin with the institution
Begin at NGV Design Store. Choose the Federation Square location for Australian art and design publishing or NGV International on St Kilda Road when the exhibition programme there is the main reason for the visit.
Read the product credits before buying. Prioritise books, exhibition publications and objects whose relationship to the museum is explicit. Allow at least an hour; the store is more useful when it follows or precedes the gallery rather than functioning as a souvenir exit.
Midday — move north and change the medium
Travel to Fitzroy for lunch and the print chapter. Melbourne’s trams make the transfer straightforward, but weekend traffic and events can slow the city. A timed appointment immediately after the museum leaves too little room for the transfer.
Afternoon — print, paper and the Fitzroy edit
Begin at Australian Print Workshop, 210 Gertrude Street. The gallery is currently open Tuesday to Saturday, so the route should not be planned around it on Sunday or Monday. Technique, edition, printer and publisher should be clear before a work is chosen.
Continue to Zetta Florence at 197B Brunswick Street for paper, journals and stationery. Test the material with the pen or medium you use rather than choosing only by pattern.
Finish at Happy Valley, now at 347 Smith Street. Browse books, vinyl, art and design slowly enough to understand the shop’s edit. Check whether a product is local, shop-exclusive or simply hard to find elsewhere.
This afternoon works on foot, but the sequence should remain flexible. Fitzroy is a neighbourhood to read rather than a list to complete.
Give coffee its own South Melbourne morning
Visit ST. ALi at 12–18 Yarra Place on a separate morning. Drink the coffee before buying beans. Discuss grinder, brew method, roast date and recipe while the cup is still in front of you.
If South Melbourne Market is part of the day, visit it for food and everyday city rhythm rather than pretending every stall belongs to a single curated shopping route.
Let the institutions set the calendar
Australian Print Workshop, museum shops and small retailers can change hours around exhibitions, public holidays and installations. Confirm the current door before travel. The route should be revised around the institutions, not forced through a closed shopfront.
Choose the route that fits the day
With ninety minutes, use the NGV Design Store and one central book or design stop. With half a day, choose Fitzroy and complete Australian Print Workshop, Zetta Florence and Happy Valley. With a full day, begin at the NGV, move to Fitzroy and leave coffee for the following morning.
