Prague Shopping Route — Old Town Design, Malá Strana Glass, Holešovice Making

Prague’s route should compare current design, glass and authorised afterlives across Old Town, Malá Strana and Holešovice. Geography matters less than the change in role: producer, museum editor, vintage specialist, reissue or contemporary studio.

Prague is compact enough to tempt an overloaded old-centre route. Resist it. The useful plan separates a Cubist and contemporary design walk, a glass-focused visit across the river, a Holešovice maker afternoon and a service-led watch appointment. Fragile goods and serious documentation need return time.

Morning — Kubista at the House at the Black Madonna

Begin at Kubista. Confirm current opening before travel; the official site identifies the gallery at the House at the Black Madonna and its focus on Czech Cubism, Art Deco, originals and reproductions. Ask the category of any object before discussing its desirability: period original, authorised reproduction, open edition, limited edition or contemporary adaptation.

Allow at least forty-five minutes. Keep designer, historical date, current producer, material and edition information. The architecture provides context, not a certificate for every product.

Late morning — Qubus and contemporary authorship

Walk to Qubus Design Studio, Rámová 3. Check current seasonal hours; official information generally follows a Tuesday-to-Saturday pattern. Compare its own production with work by represented designers and ask which Bohemian workshop made the exact piece.

Do not buy fragile glass from both shops before solving transport. One deeply understood object is a better route outcome than a bag of overlapping references.

Optional central comparison — CZECHDESIGN SHOP

Add CZECHDESIGN SHOP when a multi-maker comparison is useful. Its current published hours are weekdays 10:00–19:00 and weekends 10:00–18:00, with holiday closures. Use the wider field to compare authors, materials and prices rather than searching for one national style.

Separate Malá Strana block — ARTĚL

Cross the river for ARTĚL, U Lužického semináře 7, currently daily, 10:00–18:00 according to the dedicated store page. Give the visit a glass brief: a pair, set, colour family, pattern or commission. Inspect rim, foot, paint and variation, then request shipping and replacement terms.

ARTĚL offers private shopping and an engraving experience by advance request, with the latter requiring roughly one week’s notice. Treat that as a booked experience, not a walk-in promise. A commission should have wording, approval, timing and breakage responsibility in writing.

Separate Holešovice afternoon — Braasi and Papelote

Take the tram to Braasi Industry, Dělnická 67a. The factory/showroom generally operates Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00, but confirm visitor access. Load bags, inspect seams and ask about Prague production, materials, cleaning and repair.

Continue to the current Holešovice branch of Papelote at Bubenské nábřeží 306. Compare paper, binding, refill systems and everyday use. The older Milady Horákové 11 address should not be used as the active door; Papelote also lists a central location at Spálená 96/27.

Separate watch appointment — PRIM

Visit PRIM at Nekázanka 858/3 on a confirmed opening day. Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00–18:00, Saturday, 10:00–18:00, with Sunday and holiday closure; special notices can alter this. Bring the watch questions before the city story: movement, case, crystal, assembly, warranty and service.

Allow time away from the boutique before a consequential purchase. A watch should be reviewed for fit, thickness, legibility and future maintenance, not chosen because the brand date sounds historic.

With ninety minutes, protect the comparison

Choose Kubista and Qubus. The walk is compact and the distinction is valuable: historical design editions versus contemporary studio production. Buy only after the category of each object is clear.

Half-day version

Complete Kubista, Qubus and one CZECHDESIGN comparison, or visit ARTĚL alone with a serious glass brief. Do not add Holešovice merely to increase the count.

Use comparative context without flattening the city

For the language of editions and decorative arts, ORBIS Vienna provides a neighbouring but distinct institutional comparison. For clay bodies, glaze and installation questions, use ORBIS Ceramics. Neither link turns Prague into a generic Central European craft stop; they sharpen the vocabulary brought to its doors.

Closed-day alternative

If Qubus, Braasi or PRIM is closed, do not replace the stop with an unrelated souvenir shop. Use Kubista and CZECHDESIGN for edition comparison, or move the day toward books and tea. The route should preserve its intellectual purpose when a door fails.

Practical packing pause

Return glass and watches to the hotel before continuing to markets, crowded trams or dinner. Keep invoices and warranty cards separate. Photograph marks, patterns and damage-free condition before sealing a shipment.

Before the object leaves the counter

Before leaving Prague, confirm that every consequential object has an author, producer, material, process and service route. The city’s silhouette is memorable; the route should preserve the evidence beneath it.
