Antwerp Six poet in black and ivory — gothic romanticism cut androgynous since 1985, feathers and poetry included. Member of the Antwerp Six; the group's 1986 London Fashion Week showcase brought international acclaim.
Best for Poetic black tailoring and androgynous gothic romance.
<p>Ann Demeulemeester was one of the Antwerp Six — the graduates of the city's Royal Academy who drove a rented truck to London in 1986 and rewrote fashion's map of Europe. She founded her label in 1985 with her husband, the photographer Patrick Robyn, and began showing in Paris in 1992; from the first collection her territory was fixed: black and white, poetry and rebellion, tailoring that falls like a dropped chord.</p><p>Her muse and long correspondence was Patti Smith — the album-cover androgyny of Horses runs through the house like a watermark. Demeulemeester's cutting made romance structural: jackets sliding off one shoulder, trailing straps and half-fastened closures, leather softened until it drapes, feathers as punctuation. Gothic is the shorthand; the truer word is devotional.</p><p>The founder stepped away from her house in 2013; in 2020 it was acquired by Claudio Antonioli — the Milanese retailer whose own store shares this window — and since 2023 Stefano Gallici has designed with a young poet's reverence for the archive. The signature endures untranslated: black as a language, worn open at the throat.</p>

Graduated in 1982 from Antwerp's Royal Academy as one of the 'Antwerp Six.' Bikkembergs launched his own label in 1986 with military-inspired boots — laced through the heel — and became the first designer to stage a runway show inside a football stadium, Milan's San Siro, in 2001.
Best for Sporty futuristic
Dirk Bikkembergs graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1982 as part of the group later nicknamed the Antwerp Six, designers who trained together and went on to reshape late-20th-century fashion outside the traditional Paris and Milan centers. He launched his own label in 1986, opening with a men's shoe collection rather than clothing, built around rugged military-style boots — heavy leather construction with laces run through the heel rather than the front — deliberately at odds with the polished, lightweight Italian dress shoes dominant at the time. That shoe-first approach set the tone for a career spent fusing sportswear and tailoring: Bikkembergs became known for treating the aesthetics of football boots, training gear and locker-room culture as material for high fashion rather than keeping the two separate. That fusion reached a defining moment in June 2001, when he staged a runway show inside Milan's San Siro football stadium, becoming, by most industry accounts, the first designer to present a fashion show inside an active football venue. The brand went on to work directly with football clubs, including a design relationship with Inter Milan, cementing sport — and football specifically — as the label's recurring reference point rather than a one-off stunt.

One of the 'Antwerp Six' — poetic menswear and womenswear with print mastery, tactile luxury, and a singular creative vision. Now part of Puig.
Best for Poetic print-heavy luxury fashion.
Dries Van Noten was one of the Antwerp Six — the graduates of the city's Royal Academy who drove a van to London in 1986 and rewired fashion's map — and he became the movement's gardener-poet. From a first menswear collection sold to Barneys and Whitaker's, he built a house on prints layered like sediment: Indian embroidery over English tailoring, photographic florals on military parkas, colors mixed the way painters mix them.
He did it without a single advertisement for over three decades, independent until Puig's 2018 investment, showing in Paris while cutting in Antwerp — the Modenatie headquarters above his own flagship. His runway spectacles (a mile-long banquet table, 500 guests; carpets of real marigolds) are collected on film the way the clothes are collected in closets.
Van Noten took his bow with the Spring 2025 menswear show; Julian Klausner now writes the house's next chapters. The signature survives the succession: fashion's most literate maximalism, prints with a library behind them.

Essentiel Antwerp is a clothing label associated with graphic and floral prints combined with playful proportions and contrasting colours. Its founders began with a T-shirt collection in 1999 before developing a broader fashion range. The Antwerp womenswear shop on Huidevettersstraat offers a physical setting for comparing the label's colours and shapes beyond its online catalogue.
Best for Colourful womenswear and prints in Antwerp
Essentiel Antwerp began with a T-shirt collection launched in 1999 by Esfan Eghtessadi and Inge Onsea. The Belgian label later expanded that starting point into a full wardrobe. Print and colour remain central to its identity. Current categories range from dresses and shirts to trousers and denim as well as knitwear. Jackets and jumpsuits broaden the silhouette, while accessories carry the same visual language into smaller pieces. Named seasonal collections and campaign material give each edit a particular palette rather than presenting the range as permanent basics. The brand also separates occasion dressing from its main catalogue and maintains a second-hand route, creating a distinct channel for pieces already in circulation. Those programmes show how the business has grown without losing the authorship established by its founders. A simple product launched the company; a broader system of prints, proportions and colour now connects many categories. Essentiel Antwerp's merchant story is consequently specific and traceable: two named founders, a 1999 T-shirt origin, and a Belgian wardrobe label that treats expressive combinations as a continuing design method.
