Zurich turned truck tarpaulin into a national bag; sailcloth followed a few years behind. Freitag cuts indestructible one-off bags with a past life in Zurich workshops. QWSTION designs sustainable bags from a Zurich brand founded 2008 by five designers at one table. PortoMorcote sews upcycled bags, recycled sailcloth, handmade accessories. Recycled fabric fails at the stress points first, so look at the strap anchors before the print, then at the seam where the strap meets the body.
The Geneva workshop also alters and repairs customers’ existing clothes, from torn seams to fit adjustments. Most upcycled bags begin as advertising banners from local cultural institutions, with occasional sailcloth entering the material stream.

Route de Verbier 138, 1936 Verbier / Verbier / Switzerland
On the road up to the station, at the old-village level. Raclette du Valais AOP–Bagnes made by Jonathan; tomme, Catelle au lait cru, blue cheese, fondue and artisanal yoghurts by Marc. Seventeen milk producers, four cheese-makers. A 24-hour cheese automate so the errand does not depend on the counter being open. Swiss Cheese Awards. Workshops with Verbier Tourisme. This is the valley’s dairy logic in one door: milk from the Bagnes side, cheese that carries the AOP name, a machine that still works at midnight. Walk.
Best for Raclette AOP and local cheese — including after hours via the automate
Zurich bag brand founded 2008 by five designers including Christian Kaegi and Hannes Schoenegger, who wanted an everyday bag that didn't look like cycle-courier gear; developer of the Bananatex textile.
Best for Sustainable bags
QWSTION was founded in 2008 in a former industrial district of Zurich by a group of five: Sebastian Kruit, industrial designers Christian Kaegi and Fabrice Aeberhard, graphic designer Matthias Graf, and Hannes Schoenegger. Their starting brief was simple — they wanted a bag that could take them from a bike commute straight into a meeting without carrying an obvious 'cycle courier' look, and found nothing on the market that fit.
The brand's best-known material development is Bananatex, a woven textile made from the fiber of Abacá banana plants, developed as a durable, biodegradable alternative to synthetic technical fabrics. QWSTION has been B Corp certified and won the Design Preis Schweiz in 2019 as well as a German Sustainability Award, recognition tied specifically to its materials research rather than general product design.
Operations today split between the Zurich studio, where the brand originated, and Tyrol, Austria, where much of the day-to-day operational business is now run — a structure that has evolved as the company has grown beyond its original founding city.
