American fashion house founded in New York in 1968 by Calvin Klein and Barry Schwartz, known for minimalist sportswear, the 1978 launch of Calvin Klein Jeans and 1980s designer underwear; sold in Florence through Italian retail partners and its own boutiques.
Best for Logo basics and denim.
Calvin Klein was founded in 1968 in New York by designer Calvin Klein and his childhood friend Barry Schwartz, who started the label as a coat business, Calvin Klein Ltd., operating out of a rented room in the York Hotel with an initial $10,000 in capital. Klein's early womenswear built a reputation for minimalist tailoring and clean lines, appearing on the cover of American Vogue within a year of the company's founding and winning the Coty Award for the full women's sportswear line by 1973. The brand became a mass-market phenomenon with the 1978 launch of Calvin Klein Jeans, which reportedly sold 200,000 pairs in its first week, and again in the 1980s when Calvin Klein turned men's underwear -- including the boxer brief -- into a visible, branded fashion category rather than a purely functional garment. Today Calvin Klein operates globally as a multi-category fashion house spanning ready-to-wear, denim, underwear, fragrance and accessories, sold through its own flagship boutiques, department-store concessions and e-commerce. In Florence, Calvin Klein products are available through outlets including a Calvin Klein store on Via Calimala and via multi-brand retailers such as La Rinascente; no independently verifiable source confirms a Calvin Klein boutique specifically on Piazza della Signoria.

Pontedera, Tuscany, Italy
Italy's first jeans brand, launched by Francesco Bacci's Manifatture 7 Bell in Campi Bisenzio near Florence, after Bacci struck a denim supply deal with North Carolina's Cone Mills in the early 1950s.
Best for Denim, American-inspired
Roy Roger's is widely credited as Italy's first domestic blue-jeans brand. It grew out of Manifatture 7 Bell, a garment workshop that Francesco Bacci and his wife Giuliana had already built in Campi Bisenzio, near Florence, making handcrafted cotton and gabardine trousers. Sources give the founding year as either 1949 or 1952. Bacci travelled to the United States and secured a supply agreement with Cone Mills Corporation, then the leading American denim manufacturer, bringing authentic denim production to Italy for the first time. Roy Roger's also produced the first Italian women's jeans collection in the 1950s, and by the 1960s the factory was turning out up to 20,000 pairs a day.

Milan / Online
Milan fashion house founded 1994 by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten. Distressed denim and luxury casualwear combining Italian craftsmanship with rebellious Canadian humor.
Best for Hero denim and party tailoring.
Dsquared2 was established in Milan in 1994 by twin brothers Dean and Dan Caten, Canadian-born sons of an Italian immigrant. After studying at Parsons School of Design in New York, the brothers moved to Italy and gained experience at Versace and Diesel before launching their debut menswear collection. The brand's name reflects the twins ('D squared') and embodies the philosophy 'Born in Canada, Living in London, Made in Italy'—a collision of irreverent Canadian humor, edgy London attitude, and refined Italian craftsmanship. Dsquared2 revolutionized denim by introducing a signature distressed aesthetic—pitted, rubbed, worn and paint-stained treatments that departed from traditional luxury-jean conventions. The brand's runway presentations are theatrical productions or themed events that announce their creative direction through immersive experience. Dsquared2 appeals to luxury consumers seeking bold, personality-driven casualwear that respects Italian heritage while rejecting formality.
Naples, Italy
Sartoria Formosa has cut bespoke clothes in Naples since 1965, when Mario Formosa founded the house now run by Gennaro Formosa. The atelier at Vico Cavallerizza a Chiaia 37 makes suits, overcoats, shirts and trousers to measure by appointment. Its signatures are the hand-sewn buttonhole and the soft Neapolitan sleeve. A Luxury Casual line adds denim shirts and cashmere knitwear, jeans or cloth trousers.
Best for Bespoke collar roll polos; Bespoke shirts, Neapolitan tailoring; Bespoke Suits
Sartoria Formosa marked sixty years of tailoring in Napoli in 2025. The house describes that span as a story made of hands and thread and measure. Mario Formosa founded it in 1965, and his son Gennaro Formosa carries it today. He receives clients personally at the atelier in Vico Cavallerizza a Chiaia. The house sets out its craft in a handful of details. The buttonhole is sewn by hand to a millimetre. The sleeve is set soft and natural so that the shoulder moves freely, and the tailors treat that as a matter of comfort as much as tradition. Lapels come in many cuts rather than one, chosen for proportion and character. The trousers are built by hand to clean lines. The stated aim is a suit that follows the body rather than reshaping it. Appointments are booked for a bespoke suit, a tailored overcoat or a made-to-measure shirt. Each visit begins with a consultation. Alongside the bespoke work the house runs a Luxury Casual line of denim shirts and cashmere knitwear, jeans or cloth trousers. These are cut with the same precision for everyday wear. The anniversary programme, in the words of the house, looks to a future of elegance rather than only to the past, and the family treats the sixtieth year as a starting point for the next generation of the atelier.

Breganze / Veneto / Online
Denim house founded in Breganze, Veneto in 1978, when 23-year-old Renzo Rosso bought a stake in a manufacturer called Moltex and renamed it Diesel. Still headquartered in Breganze; now the flagship label of Rosso's OTB Group.
Best for Statement denim and Glenn Martens-era fashion.
Diesel traces to 1978, when Renzo Rosso, then 23, used a loan from his father to buy a holding in a Veneto clothing manufacturer called Moltex, owned by Adriano Goldschmied, and renamed it Diesel. Rosso had been sewing his own low-rise, bell-bottomed jeans on his mother's machine since his early teens in nearby Brugine, selling them to friends before joining the trade professionally. The Diesel name was chosen because, amid the 1970s oil crisis, 'diesel' read as the alternative fuel - a way of positioning the label as an alternative to mainstream casualwear. The company has remained headquartered in Breganze, in the Veneto region, since its founding. In 2002, Rosso formalized his growing fashion holdings by founding OTB Group, a holding company that has since brought Diesel together with other houses under common ownership as Rosso expanded beyond the original jeanswear label. Diesel today produces jeans, ready-to-wear and accessories and sells online at diesel.com, alongside its retail network.

Italian denim label founded 1984 by Claudio Grotto in Chiuppano, Veneto. Its parent, Grotto S.p.A., neared bankruptcy in 2021; the brand and Chiuppano factory were acquired in 2022 by Milano 1984 SpA, ending direct Grotto-family ownership.
Best for Italian jeans culture from Chiuppano, Veneto, since 1984.
Gas Jeans was founded in 1984 by Claudio Grotto in Chiuppano, near Vicenza in the Veneto region, growing out of an earlier 1970s workshop background in the same area. The label launched as a menswear jeans line before expanding into womenswear. Under Grotto family ownership it grew into a recognized premium denim brand distributed internationally. In 2021 its parent company, Grotto S.p.A., came close to bankruptcy after accumulating roughly 80 million euros in losses and laying off around 200 workers. In 2022 the brand, the Chiuppano factory, and its roughly 140 remaining employees were acquired out of that crisis by Milano 1984 SpA, an investment vehicle led by entrepreneur Andrea Citterio; no member of the Grotto family remained involved in the new ownership structure.
Italy
Italian shirt brand named for and based in Portofino, on the Ligurian coast, positioned as 'Italian luxury since 1979'; known for washed cotton and denim shirts with a signature embroidered-sun chest motif, in a range of fading treatments from light to dark.
Best for Tuscan casual polos; Shirts, casual, Tuscan style
Giannetto Portofino takes its name from Portofino on the Italian Riviera, and its own site dates the brand to 1979 and describes it as based in that town. The shirts are made from cottons including honeycomb weave, denim and flannel, using washing and finishing techniques the brand calls 'sabbiature,' producing a faded, worn-in look. A recurring 'embroidered sun' motif on the chest functions as the brand's signature detail. Sourcing on the brand's manufacturing location is inconsistent: Giannetto's own marketing ties it closely to Portofino/Liguria, while at least one U.S. retailer describes the shirts as handmade in Naples.
