Kamakura Shirts sells Sciolto one-piece collars at honest prices as its signature family. Sugar Cane weaves sugar cane fibre into vintage workwear shirts and denim. Wacko Maria prints Hawaiian shirts with rock glamour in the Tokyo shop. The collar stand frames the face, so check the roll in a mirror before anything else. An Oxford cloth forgives the laundry and the years, which makes it the shirt to buy for daily wear.

Natal Design was founded in 1999 by graphic designer Tsukada Koji, who started out printing his own T-shirt designs before formalizing the brand with exhibition-style presentations from 2009 onward. The label draws heavily on 1990s American casual wear and Tokyo's Harajuku youth culture, filtered through Tsukada's background in graphic design rather than traditional pattern-cutting. Its signature pieces include sarouel-style denim trousers cut with stretch fabric and oversized flap pockets, shorts finished with bird-shaped pocket details, and — through a collaboration with the Shiga-based down specialist Nanga — down jackets that pair Natal Design's silhouettes with Nanga's insulation expertise. Beyond clothing, the brand has extended into eyewear, camping chairs and canvas totes made with specialist manufacturing partners. Natal Design is based near Meiji University Station in Tokyo, where it runs its own retail shop, Scatter Brain, alongside distribution through roughly twenty wholesale partners across Japan and exhibitions and stockists reaching New York, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Nepenthes' outdoor sub-label, founded 2002-03 by Kaname Nagaoka and named for its Sapporo, Hokkaido store address (Minami 2-jo Nishi 8-chome) - not Tokyo. Built around Tenkara fly-fishing gear reworked into pocket-heavy city outerwear.
Best for Tenkara, bush shirts, outdoor
South2 West8 was founded around 2002-2003 by Kaname Nagaoka as the outdoor-focused member of the Nepenthes family of brands, developed with guidance from Nepenthes founders Keizo Shimizu and Daiki Suzuki. The name comes directly from the flagship store's street address in Sapporo, Hokkaido - Minami 2-jo, Nishi 8-chome, which translates to 'South 2, West 8.' The brand's design language centres on Tenkara, a minimalist, centuries-old Japanese fly-fishing technique; Nagaoka released his first collection of fly-fishing-inspired gear in 2003. From there, South2 West8 expanded into hard-wearing, pocket-dense apparel that translates fishing-vest functionality into city-friendly outerwear.

1950s American shirt label revived by Japan's Toyo Enterprises, founded in Tokyo in 1965 by Susumu Kobayashi. Produces chain-stitched rayon aloha and western shirts made in Japan, reproducing the label's original vintage patterns.
Best for Rockabilly shirts, chain stitch
Star of Hollywood was a real American shirt label in the 1950s that went out of business and faded into obscurity outside vintage-clothing circles. Toyo Enterprises, a Japanese heritage-clothing company founded in Tokyo in 1965 by Susumu Kobayashi to make clothing for US military bases, later acquired rights to revive the name. Toyo is known for reproducing multiple defunct mid-century American labels this way, and under its ownership Star of Hollywood makes chain-stitched rayon aloha and western shirts, produced in Japan with close attention to period-accurate prints, cuts and open-collar styling - including a run of Elvis-themed designs. The shirts are sold through specialist reproduction and Japanese heritage-clothing retailers rather than under a single company storefront.
Tokyo, Japan
Toyo Enterprise develops multiple reproduction labels, including Sugar Cane denim, Buzz Rickson’s military clothing and Sun Surf shirts. Each sub-brand has a distinct historical focus, so shoppers should browse by label rather than company name.

Jun Takahashi’s Undercover has spent three decades combining punk references, graphic streetwear and runway fashion in a Japanese label that moves between T-shirts, tailoring and conceptual seasonal collections. The useful distinction is the punk-meets-luxury design language and long evolution across streetwear and fashion.
Best for Punk-inspired luxury streetwear and runway collections
Jun Takahashi founded Undercover in 1990 while still at Bunka Fashion College, ran the Nowhere boutique in Harajuku with Nigo, and fronted a Sex Pistols cover band — the punk credentials are literal. What he built from them is Japanese streetwear's most artful evolution: graphic rebellion refined, season by season, into full runway fashion that Paris took seriously from his 2002 womenswear debut onward.
The house motto, "We make noise, not clothes," undersells the tailoring. Undercover collections are cinematic universes — A Clockwork Orange, Twin Peaks and 2001 licensed and reimagined, the GYAKUSOU running line with Nike proving the design brain works at heart-rate pace, collaborations from Supreme to Valentino's Pierpaolo Piccioli treating Takahashi as a peer, not a vendor.
Kawakubo championed him early, and the lineage shows: ideas first, hype as a byproduct. Three decades on, Takahashi remains the influential designer casual fans have never heard of — which in Harajuku terms is the highest possible rank.
Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo streetwear label founded in 2005 by former J-League goalkeeper Atsuhiko Mori and Keiji Ishizuka, growing out of a Tokyo record store into leopard-print and aloha-shirt fashion rooted in music and film culture.
Best for Hawaiian shirts, rock glamour; Hawaiian shirts
Wacko Maria was founded in Tokyo in 2005 by Atsuhiko Mori and Keiji Ishizuka, both former professional footballers in Japan's J-League; Mori played as a goalkeeper for Yokohama Flugels from 1991 to 1997. After retiring, Mori opened a bar where he DJed reggae, ska, funk and rockabilly, and the label grew out of a record store the pair ran. The brand's designs - leopard prints, aloha shirts, and tattoo-influenced graphics - draw on Mori's interests in vinyl culture, punk and film. About a decade after founding, Wacko Maria opened its first physical store, Paradise Tokyo, in Meguro ward.
