Abacus Gallery has been owned and run by the same people for fifty years. It started small in Boothbay Harbor and has grown to five locations across Maine. That is unusual continuity for a craft gallery, and it shows in how carefully the stock is chosen.
Dana Heacock's calendar is what the gallery is most associated with. The 2027 edition is the thirtieth, carrying twelve monthly posters of new artwork, and the series has collected awards along the way. For a good number of customers the annual calendar is what first brought them through the door.
The other signature is stranger and better. The gallery carries one-of-a-kind assemblages built around antique wooden boxes and brought to life with found objects and moving parts, and no two of them are built to do the same thing.
The range runs to lamps and clocks as well as motorised sculptures, and they are stocked across every location. Jewellery and objects for the home sit alongside them. The moving pieces are the part of the stock that cannot be found anywhere else in the state.
