Sotirio Bulgari, a Greek silversmith, opened his Roman shop in 1884; the Via dei Condotti flagship that followed remains the house's spiritual home. Bulgari's jewelry took Rome itself as its material — bold volumes, cabochon-cut colored stones, the Serpenti coiling snake that became its most famous motif, and coin-set Monete pieces that literalize the classical inheritance.
