Çengelköy Tarihi Çınaraltı

Çınaraltı takes its name from the plane tree it sits beneath on the Bosphorus shore at Çengelköy, a tree local estimates put at roughly eight centuries old. What began generations ago as a simple fisherman's café under that tree grew into one of Istanbul's best-known çay bahçesi — a tea garden rather than a tea shop, built around glasses of Turkish black tea drunk slowly at outdoor tables facing the water.

The garden has operated in something like its current form since the 1970s, and İsmet Morgül has run it since 1995, continuing a thirty-year stretch of the same family stewardship. Writers and intellectuals — among them the poet İsmet Özel and the academic Bahri Zengin — were known to hold informal lessons and long conversations at its tables, giving the garden a literary reputation that outlasted any single generation of regulars. It stays open around the clock, seven days a week, letting the tea, the cats, and the seagulls outlast any one crowd.

For a country where a glass of çay is closer to a social ritual than a beverage order, Çınaraltı is the kind of address Istanbullus themselves point visitors toward: no menu of exotic blends, just black tea, a Bosphorus view, and a tree old enough to have shaded a very different city.
