Chaaye Khana

Chaaye Khana opened its first room in Islamabad's F-6 sector in 2013, built on a simple premise: good tea, made properly, in a warm room, with food that tasted homemade. The name means, literally, "tea house," and the founders positioned it as something Pakistan hadn't quite had before — a sit-down chai house built with the same seriousness other cities give specialty coffee.

The menu treats preparation as the whole point. Doodh patti is brewed to order rather than kept warm in an urn, Kashmiri chai arrives the traditional deep pink and tastes of cardamom and cream, and matka chai is served in a clay cup the way roadside stalls have always served it, just without the rush. More than seventy curated tea blends now anchor a menu built around Pakistani and South Asian tastes rather than an imported café template.

A decade on, Chaaye Khana has grown from that single Islamabad room to more than thirty locations across the country, recognized as the pioneer of the modern Pakistani tea house, and has carried the format abroad through a UK franchise registered with the British Franchise Association. Few chains built around doodh patti and Kashmiri chai have gone from one neighborhood room to a national — now international — footprint this fast.
