Edwin Fii is a sculptor and engraver working from Taaoa on the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas, French Polynesia. For more than 30 years he has specialised in the techniques of working bone, and he describes that passion as having become his profession. His inspiration comes from Polynesian legends and from scenes of daily life, with nature as a further source. His current work is three dimensional pieces that he describes as growing finer and more detailed with each work. Titles shown on his site include Makaiaanui, the pig that crossed the sea, and Tapati at Rapa Nui. The Service de l'Artisanat Traditionnel lists him as an accredited expert whose registered activities include sculpture and engraving on wood and bone as well as mother-of-pearl and bamboo. Traditional jewellery and the making of wind instruments complete that listing. He shows and sells his work at the village of Atuona on exhibition dates published on his site, and pendants are offered online. Visitors may also call at the house, since his atelier stands near the Tohua Upeke sacred site in the Taaoa valley.
