Ezpeleta

Ezpeleta has made rain umbrellas in Oñati, in Spain's Gipuzkoa province, without interruption since 1935, and is described as one of the only businesses left in Spain still assembling umbrellas entirely by hand — the original machinery, by the family's own account, has not changed since the factory opened. The house is 100% family-owned, now in its third generation of Ezpeletas.

The family's footprint grew well beyond that first workshop: in 1954 the second generation relocated part of the business to Vigo and opened a new factory there, and in 1988 the third generation opened what is now the group's largest factory, across the border in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal. That larger operation diversified into outdoor furniture and parasols worked in polymers, metals and fabrics — but the original Oñati site kept making umbrellas, in the family's words, "with the same passion as before."

The umbrellas themselves lean on imported materials selected for quality: fine Italian fabrics and handles finished to order, with a dedicated "Handmade in Spain" line sold alongside the brand's wider wholesale catalog. Ninety years after Oñati's original rain-umbrella factory opened, it remains the throughline connecting a multinational outdoor-furniture group back to one Basque family's original hand trade.
