Gyokushodo

Gyokushodo has made incense in Osaka since 1804 (Bunka 1), a run of more than 220 years centered in the city's Higashinari ward. Through that span the house's stated focus has stayed narrow: refining blending technique and quality across a full range of grades, from everyday sticks to Buddhist altar and gift incense, rather than diversifying into unrelated product lines.

The more recent turn in its history is retail-facing: Gyokushodo opened its first flagship store, Ichikō Ichie ('one incense, one encounter'), moving a business that had operated mainly as a maker and wholesaler into direct contact with customers and, per the company's own account, toward international as well as domestic buyers.

For a house whose name rarely reaches incense drinkers outside Japan the way Kyoto's grander names do, Gyokushodo's two-century run as a working Osaka incense maker — and its recent step into its own storefront — makes it a working counterpart to the more famous temple-incense houses, built on volume and range rather than a single signature blend.
