Haida Heritage Centre Gift Shop

The Haida Heritage Centre Gift Shop sits inside the Haida Heritage Centre at Ḵay Llnagaay, or Sea-Lion Town, an ancient village site at Skidegate on Haida Gwaii. The centre was designed to resemble the oceanside Haida village that once stood there. A series of traditional longhouses was built to blend into the original Haida Gwaii Museum, which has occupied the site since 1976. Each item in the shop was created by Haida artists and is connected to a charitable cause to uplift the community. The centre's logo, designed by Tyson Brown and donated on March 27, 2015, appears on merchandise whose proceeds go to the general Haida Heritage Centre fund. The Trading House Gift Shop has its own manager, and online listings include full-zip tops and T-shirts, with pole stickers. The wider 50,000 square foot centre houses the museum, a Performance House, a Carving Shed, a Canoe House, the Bill Reid Teaching Centre and the Ḵay Bistro. Six monumental poles represent the villages of Skidegate, Ts'aahl, Cumshewa, Skedans, SGang Gwaay and Tanu. They were carved in 2000 by Norman Price, Garner Moody, Guujaaw, Jim Hart, Tim Boyko and Giitsxaa with their apprentices and raised in June 2001. The doors opened in 2007 and the grand opening followed in August 2008. The centre gives its address as #2 Second Beach Road in Skidegate on Haida Gwaii.
