What Leica is known for
The world's most iconic camera manufacturer — precision optics, German engineering, and the red dot that every photographer covets. Since 1914.
Ernst Leitz's optical works in Wetzlar produced microscopes from 1869; in 1914 engineer Oskar Barnack built a small camera using 35mm cine film, and when it reached market in 1925 the Leica — Leitz Camera — invented photography as the world now knows it. The compact 35mm format liberated the medium from tripods: Cartier-Bresson's decisive moments, Capa's war frames, and most of the twentieth century's defining photojournalism passed through Leica rangefinders. The M system, launched in 1954, continues in production with its lineage unbroken — an M camera today accepts lenses decades old. Manufacture returned fully to Wetzlar's Leitz Park, where the factory, museum, and flagship store make the town a photographic pilgrimage. The M rangefinder remains the essential object: manual, optical, deliberate — a machine that enforces the discipline the medium was built on.
In Wetzlar, book the factory tour alongside the museum — watching lens assembly by hand recalibrates what the prices buy, and the flagship stocks the full system.
