Mezcaloteca

Mezcaloteca opened in the city of Oaxaca in 2010 as a dedicated tasting room at Reforma 506 in the Centro district. The site states its purpose as the "conservation and dissemination of diversity in traditional mezcals and their biocultural processes," positioning the operation around preserving traditional production knowledge rather than commercial volume.

The collection draws from mezcals produced in multiple Mexican states, selected against a stated criterion of belonging to what the site calls "the universe of traditional mezcals" — a curatorial standard favoring small-batch, artisanal production over industrially produced spirits. Mezcaloteca frames its work around the maestros mezcaleros who make these products, presenting the tasting room as a platform for advancing recognition of these traditional producers.

Tastings at the venue are described as personalized, structured to contrast different productions against one another as a way of training the palate to distinguish traditional mezcal styles.
