What Tod's is known for
The Gommino driving shoe from the Della Valle family's Marche factories — Italian casual-luxury leather.
The Della Valle family made shoes in the Marche from the 1920s; Diego Della Valle's stroke of clarity in the late 1970s created Tod's around a single object — the Gommino, a driving moccasin soled with 133 rubber pebbles, designed for the pedal and adopted for everything else. The Gommino became Italian sprezzatura in footwear form: aristocrats, industrialists, and Agnelli himself wore them as the uniform of dressed-down authority. The house, still family-controlled and headquartered in the Marche where production remains, extended into loafers, bags — the D bag among them — and a broader leather goods wardrobe, and has underwritten major Italian heritage restorations including the Colosseum. The Gommino in suede is the essential purchase, worn sockless in the canonical manner. Few houses are so completely explained by one shoe; fewer still made the explanation this durable.
Size the Gommino snug — suede relaxes with wear — and expect to resole eventually; the pebbled sole is consumable by design and the house offers replacement.
Best for — Gommino drivers and weekend leather luxury.
Made in its Marche factories, Italy.
