Toko Kopi Tuku

Toko Kopi Tuku opened in South Jakarta in 2015 and is widely credited with sparking Indonesia's modern kopi susu, or iced milk coffee, boom. Its signature drink, the Es Kopi Susu Tetangga — literally the neighbor's iced milk coffee — became the template that a wave of imitators across the country would follow in the years after it first appeared on the menu.

That single drink's popularity turned a South Jakarta shop into a reference point for an entire national coffee trend, one that reshaped how a generation of Indonesian cafes built their menus around iced, milk-forward coffee rather than the hot black brews that had dominated before it. Tuku has since expanded to Surabaya, carrying the same formula into Indonesia's second-largest city and testing whether the drink's appeal travels beyond the capital.

For a shop whose influence is measured less in awards than in how many other cafes now serve some version of its drink, Toko Kopi Tuku's place in Indonesian coffee culture is unusual: it didn't just serve kopi susu, it set the standard the rest of the market has been chasing since 2015.
