What Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace is known for

Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace grew from the work of Ni Made Jati, who turned her passion for Balinese lace into a business in the early 1970s. Her first years were spent selling from camper vans along the West Coast of America, carrying what she had brought from Bali. The lace, known in English as cutwork and in Balinese as krawang, is still made in the traditional way. Fabric is stretched on bamboo hoops and sewn by hand on foot-powered machines identical to the old Singer models, the thread built up layer upon layer. Empty areas are cut away with small scissors while the needle binds the loose edges, and a single piece can take five or more days. The company now employs over 500 craftspeople in a vertically integrated atelier in Tabanan, Bali, and its designs reach over 150 countries. Collections cover resort and formal wear as well as bridal pieces. Menswear and home linen sit alongside. The head office and store stand on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai in Suwung Kangin, Denpasar, and boutiques follow in Sanur and Ubud as well as Seminyak.
