Valentino

Valentino Garavani opened his Roman couture house in 1960 on Via dei Condotti and dressed the dolce vita at its height — Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy (who wore Valentino for her wedding to Onassis), and decades of red carpets in the saturated shade the industry simply calls Valentino red. His all-white 1968 collection remains a couture landmark. The founder retired in 2008 after a nearly fifty-year reign unusual for its consistency of vision: unapologetic beauty, Roman grandeur, extraordinary atelier handwork. Successors — most influentially Pierpaolo Piccioli — carried the couture spirit forward, keeping the Roman ateliers central and the red renewed.
