What Valentino is known for

Roman couture house of the red dress — studios still facing the Spanish Steps.

Valentino Garavani opened his Roman couture house in 1960 on Via dei Condotti and dressed the dolce vita at its height — Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy (who wore Valentino for her wedding to Onassis), and decades of red carpets in the saturated shade the industry simply calls Valentino red. His all-white 1968 collection remains a couture landmark. The founder retired in 2008 after a nearly fifty-year reign unusual for its consistency of vision: unapologetic beauty, Roman grandeur, extraordinary atelier handwork. Successors — most influentially Pierpaolo Piccioli — carried the couture spirit forward, keeping the Roman ateliers central and the red renewed. Rockstud accessories brought the house a modern signature in studs and leather. In Rome the house is at home: the couture salons remain in Palazzo Mignanelli, and a red dress or Rockstud purchase carries the city's DNA directly.

In Rome, walk past Palazzo Mignanelli near the Spanish Steps to see the couture house itself; the Rockstud pieces in the signature red are the portable version.

Best for — Rockstud accessories and red-carpet romance.
