Antwerp Buyer's Guide — Buy the House That Still Works Here

Antwerp will offer you a generation before it offers you a door. Reverse that order. Buy from the house that still works here, a street, a counter, a garment or a bottle you can hold, and leave the Six as a reading list.

Fashion: buy the object in the room

At Dries Van Noten — Het Modepaleis, Nationalestraat 16 (51.2181461, 4.4004044), start with something you will wear this week: a scarf, a shirt, shoes or the house fragrance. Official pages place women on the ground floor and men on the first, in a shop opened in 1989 inside an 1881 building. Sunday is closed. The Dries Van Noten card is biography. It is not a second fitting room.

At Ann Demeulemeester the official store page now lists Leopold de Waelplaats / Verlatstraat, Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 18:30. The mapped door is Verlatstraat 38 (51.2097204, 4.3937126), in Zuid, not on Nationalestraat. Buy the black tailoring or the shoe on the rail. The Milan boutique on Via Monte Napoleone is a different city.

At Christian Wijnants, Steenhouwersvest 36 (51.2177458, 4.3988834), name fibre and weight before you choose a knit. Official hours disagree (10:30 against 11:00). Ask at the door. At Essentiel Antwerp, Kammenstraat 56 (51.2166428, 4.4010346), buy the print on the rail. Designed in Antwerp is a house fact. It does not exempt the garment from fit.

At Verso, Lange Gasthuisstraat 11 (51.2157237, 4.4053723), you are in an Antwerp multi-brand house, not a local atelier for those international names. Record the brand, size and return terms. Graanmarkt 13 is a local house at Graanmarkt 13. The official e-shop page says the physical store has permanently closed. Do not walk there for a garment until the house republishes a shop.

Jan-Jan Van Essche still designs from Nachtegaalstraat 27, Academy 2003 and an annual wardrobe from 2010, but that address is a studio. Confirm retail before you walk. A partner counter at Atelier Solarshop on Dambruggestraat is a separate house. Do not invent a boutique for Walter Van Beirendonck (office at Aalmoezenierstraat 2), Marina Yee, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Raf Simons or A.F. Vandevorst. Those cards have no current Antwerp shop you can walk into.

Food, drink, paper: buy for the remaining days

Philip's Biscuits at Korte Gasthuisstraat 39 (51.2165021, 4.4047361) has baked by hand since 1991. Official copy still says Made in Antwerp. Biscuits travel. Ice Pearls at number 25 is a second, weather-sensitive counter, not the main biscuit door. Del Rey at Appelmansstraat 5 (51.2171137, 4.4177315) does not travel as well: buy a box you will finish, and use the tearoom if you want cake in the room.

Caffènation has roasted almost daily since 2003. The official CITY bar is Mechelsesteenweg 16 (51.2114732, 4.4073256), the door that matches the register's Mechelseplein line. Buy beans you can brew, or drink the cup there. A 2026 house blog names ZUID as a new flagship without printing a street. Do not invent one. Normo roasts in Borgerhout and pours at Minderbroedersrui 30 (51.2224248, 4.4041991). Official hours there are Monday to Saturday 08:30 to 17:00, Sunday closed.

At Stadsbrouwerij De Koninck, Mechelsesteenweg 291 (51.1996001, 4.4156007), the shop is only at the brewery and a crowler is meant for seven days. Official tour hours are Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 17:30, Monday closed. Elixir d'Anvers (F.X. de Beukelaer) still distills the 1863 recipe at Haantjeslei 132 (51.2009238, 4.4022109). Regular visitor hours are not verified. Luddites Books & Wine at Hopland 34 (51.2166319, 4.4121435) sells the novel and the bottle together. MoMu Shop at Nationalestraat 28 is for the catalogue, not a substitute garment. Monday closed.

Diamonds: document before the word Antwerp

BAUNAT at Schupstraat 21, box 5 (51.2142192, 4.4179258) works by appointment. The house was founded here in 2008 and makes to order. Official text says pieces are usually not for same-day collection, with GIA, IGI or HRD certification above 0.30 carat. Weekdays 09:00 to 18:00 by booking. Record metal, stone, certificate, size and service. Walk away when Antwerp is asked to replace those facts.

The Antwerp refusal rule

Walk away when a famous name has no street, when a museum tote is doing the work of a cut, when a multi-brand bag is sold as local making, or when a deposit is asked before the specification is stable. Leave Copyright Bookshop off the list: the official house closed Nationalestraat 28a in May 2024. Leave Eastpak and Kipling off the Antwerp map: the recorded door is Galeries Lafayette, 40 Boulevard Haussmann, Paris. Atelier Munro books in Amsterdam.

If you have one morning, spend it on Nationalestraat 16 and 28, then Kammenstraat 56 and 57, then Steenhouwersvest 36. If you have an afternoon left, take Zuid for coffee, the brewery, or Ann on Verlatstraat. If you have an appointment, keep Schupstraat as its own hour. Do not stitch those chapters into one heroic circuit.

The route stays on doors the register can prove. The Six are a chapter. They are not a shopping list.
