Buying in Dakar: Tableware, Furniture and Bags
Fatyly: look at the design on the porcelain
The design reference and the place of manufacture are different questions. Do not assume that an Ivorian motif means the object was made in Ivory Coast, or that a Dakar-based brand makes every piece there. Ask about the particular item if origin matters to your purchase.
Contact the brand to arrange where to see the collection. For tableware you intend to use, ask about care and suitability for your routine. If you are choosing a gift, consider a single piece that the recipient can use without needing to complete a service. Check how it can be protected in luggage before committing to a fragile purchase.
Diom: distinguish the showroom from the atelier
The company works by quotation and says that many pieces can be adapted in dimensions, finishes or materialsS3. Bring the measurements that matter for your room, including the space through which a large piece would have to pass. A photograph can explain the setting, but it cannot replace dimensions.
For a proposed commission, ask for a written description of the specification before comparing prices. Keep the cost of the object separate from packing and transport. Confirm arrangements for a showroom or atelier visit rather than assuming either location offers the same experience. A design enquiry does not require you to commit to a purchase during the trip.
Nahyel: choose a bag for its intended load
Start with what the bag must carry. Test access to the compartments you will use most and check the strap in your usual carrying position. For a laptop bag, use the dimensions of the device with its case rather than relying on its screen size.
Ask about the material and care of the exact model. A finish shown in a collection photograph need not be the finish on the bag in front of you. If you are buying for someone else, favour the recipient's everyday needs over a size or colour that only suits the current trip. Confirm the branch and selection before making a special journey.
