Dubai Buyer’s Guide — Separate Product, Price and Refund
Dubai removes friction with extraordinary efficiency; careful buying restores the distinctions that speed can erase. Product, origin, headline price, final cost, refund route and warranty should be separated before payment.
Fragrance: let the dry-down finish the sale
At Abdul Samad Al Qurashi, Ajmal, Rasasi or Swiss Arabian, begin with blotters and narrow the field before anything touches skin. One or two finalists are enough. Record the exact product name, concentration and bottle size, then leave the opening behind long enough to understand the dry-down.
“Oud” needs qualification. The material may be natural agarwood, a blended accord or a reconstruction. Full formulas may remain proprietary, but the house should still be able to identify the product and explain its intended form. Natural agarwood also carries sourcing and wildlife-trade implications; ambiguity should not be mistaken for rarity.

Hallmarks support a metal claim but do not settle every question. For significant gemstones, treatment disclosure and a suitable laboratory report should travel with the invoice. Resizing terms matter before payment, especially when collection falls close to departure.
Chocolate and coffee: name Dubai’s contribution
At Mirzam Chocolate Makers, establish the cacao origin, percentage, local production steps, allergens, shelf life and heat protection. Bean-to-bar is most useful when it identifies the decisions the maker controls.
At RAW Coffee Company, buy for the grinder and brewer you actually use. Roast date, recommended rest period and a workable recipe matter more than a tasting note your equipment cannot reproduce. Dubai roasting is the local transformation; the coffee plant grew elsewhere.
Records, repair and independent design
At The Flip Side, condition, pressing and edition should remain attached to the record. A Dubai shop can add a community, selection and service without claiming local manufacture.
At KAVE The Story of Things, current public access and programme should be confirmed before travel. Repair and reuse are meaningful only when the actual service, workshop or event is available.
Regional clothing and footwear
For Hanayen or Tamashee, the exact item should reveal designer, production country, material, sizing, alteration and care. “Regional design” describes an idea; it does not automatically state where the garment or shoe was made.
A made-to-order piece should have a written specification, fitting sequence, delivery date, deposit and correction policy. A departure-night collection leaves no room for inspection.
The VAT refund is part of the paperwork, not the persuasion
The UAE tourist VAT-refund scheme operates through registered participating retailers and governed export procedures. Eligibility, minimum purchase rules, invoice details, validation and timing can change, so the current official requirements should be confirmed before payment.
Keep the goods, identification, invoice and refund record accessible until departure processing is complete. Calculate value on the final confirmed refund, not the most optimistic number mentioned at the counter.
Heat, warranty and final landed cost
Chocolate, fragrance, leather and electronics experience Dubai’s climate differently. Insulated packing, shade, upright storage and collection timing belong to the purchase.
For global luxury, establish whether the warranty is international, regional or tied to the UAE retailer. A fair comparison includes the identical model, home price, Dubai price, exchange rate, tax treatment, warranty, transport and any import cost.
Dubai’s speed becomes a genuine advantage only after product, price and refund have been separated.
