For a wearable purchase, begin with the fabric and the cut. Decide between regular use and an occasion piece, then look at how the garment sits when you move. A fabric's history does not tell you whether its present condition suits the wear you intend.

Ask about the material and care of the exact piece. If considering an alteration, discuss what can be changed before committing to the purchase. A gallery that makes clothing is not a promise that a particular size or adjustment will be available during your visit.
