ORBIS city intelligence
Percorso: Zermatt on foot, 60–90 minutes
Start: Bahnhofplatz (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn arrival)
End: Church end of Bahnhofstrasse, or back to the square
Character: Car-free village. Electric taxis and luggage carts only. The shopping is the walk.
The route follows Bahnhofstrasse in street-number order before taking the useful side lanes. Confirm shoulder-season hours on the day, and treat the high-altitude counters as mountain-station retail rather than village shops.
1. Station square — train air, then bread
You step off the train into Bahnhofplatz. Gornergrat Bahn is opposite. The air is cold stone, a little train oil, and — if the wind is right — butter and yeast.
- Bayard (Bahnhofplatz 2) — family sport house since 1965, four floors, boot fitting, rental. Same square as Montbell.
- Montbell (Bahnhofplatz 2) — Japanese kit, opened 2015. List only.
- Matterhorn Bäckerei — the first warm window on the square.
- Bäckerei Fuchs (Bahnhofstrasse 28, coords 46.022204, 7.747233) — the village bakery since 1965. Four doors in all; this is the one after the train. Bergführerbrot, Matterhörnli, the smell that still belongs to the place. Getwingstrasse 24 has the terrace if you want a quieter table.
- The North Face (Bahnhofplatz 7, via Bayard) — list only.
- WEGA boutique / Swiss Shop on the square — gifts and watches.
2. Hofmattstrasse — the working lane
Two minutes off the square, the lane that still has a post-office memory.
- ZAP Zur Alten Post (Hofmattstrasse 3) — books, maps, stationery.
- Julen Sport (Hofmattstrasse 4) — since 1958, family sport, rental, the Julen name.
- Migros — everyday food, Valais shelves; the Matterhorn butcher nearby sells Horu cheese.
- OLMO (Hofmattstrasse 14) — streetwear and FREITAG bags.
- Hamilton × Air Zermatt (Hofmattstrasse 12) — local helicopter company + Hamilton watches.
- Mammut — Swiss alpine brand. List only.
- Stoked — further along the strip.
3. Bahnhofstrasse south — numbers climbing
Walk away from the trains. The parade is about five hundred metres.
- Tissot (2) — list only.
- Bijou les Boutiques (7a) — independent fashion since the company began in 1968; NILE, accessories, handmade jewellery; Jennifer Zimmermann’s room.
- Bucherer (6) — multi-brand watch floor. List + pointer.
- Davis (8) — Maison Davis concept store & gallery since 1987 (Pieter & Julian).
- Papermoon (15 preferred; some listings 60) — Borer family, children’s ski and street, ages 0–14.
- Sprüngli (9) — Zürich chocolate. List only.
- Stäuble Chronometrie (11) — independent watch counter.
- TAG Heuer & Zenith (14) — opened 17 December 2014 with Schindler. First monobrand watch rooms in the village.
- Icebreaker (16) — merino. List only.
- Moncler (20) — end of 2010. List only.
- Matterland (24) — Perren, early 1950s. Carved chalets, music boxes, the stuffed Schwarznasenschaf.
- Robert Bijouterie (25) — independent.
- Hublot (27) — 2015 chalet-boutique. List + the design story.
- Mountain Shop (28) — since 2011, three floors, Dynafit, climbing and touring. Fuchs café is also at 28.
- WEGA (29) — souvenirs, basement books.
- Bayard Sports & Fashion (35) — main sport floor.
- Fernanda’s (39) — Swiss design, makers’ names on the cards.
- Fusalp (39) — list only.
- Ochsner Sport (46) — Swiss chain. List only.
- Calida (49) — list only.
- Lorenz Bach outlet / Swatch (50/52) — secondary rooms.
- Odlo (64) — list only.
- Swiss Artisans (72) — jewellery, Valais craft. Fuchs shop also at 72.
- Matterhorn Sport (78) — southern rental anchor.
- Bogner (102 / Kirchplatz) — list only.
4. The watch / fashion knot at number 5
Bahnhofstrasse 5 is dense: Haute Horlogerie Schindler, NORQAIN (first boutique worldwide, December 2021), and Maison Lorenz Bach main room (moved here Christmas 2024). Three different tills in one short stretch. Walk it as a single pause. Schindler is the local watch house that partnered the first monobrand rooms in 2014; it is not the elevator company.
5. Side lanes — two extra minutes each
- Spissstrasse: Zer ToolBox (23) for a working cowbell; Egon Gruber (49) for metalwork that is actually made.
- Metzggasse: Puralpina (2) for soap and Valais food — the air changes when you leave the parade.
- Kirchstrasse: Slalom Sport (17, Julen AG) for ski and bike; Fuchs shop at 46.
- Bodmenstrasse: Sportina (14 — 46.022779, 7.747394), since 1956, between Peak Performance and Hotel Alex.
- Luchernstrasse: Why Not (9) — independent boutique, HOLD.
- Riedstrasse: Azzurra Sport (10) — family Cafasso rental near the Matterhorn Express base; Canada Goose exclusive; the desk you use when you are already heading for the glacier lifts.
- Oberhäusern: Horu Käserei (6 — 46.020100, 7.751874). The only dairy that still works pure Zermatt milk. Self-service fridge; call first in July and August. The commercial street falls away; the air is quieter.
6. What the walk is for
Boots and rental at Julen, Bayard, Matterhorn Sport or Azzurra. Bread at Fuchs or on the square. Cheese from Horu if you climb to Oberhäusern or find it at the butcher and the bakeries. A souvenir that was made at Matterland, Swiss Artisans or Fernanda’s. A cowbell that is hardware at ToolBox. A watch conversation at Stäuble, Robert or Schindler. The brand rooms are there if you already came for them; they do not define the village.
Return to Bahnhofplatz the same way, or continue past the church to the paths above. The counters on Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn are altitude retail — separate from this street.
