Francisco Espinheira opened this closet-sized bar on Largo de São Domingos in 1840, serving a single drink: ginjinha, sour cherries steeped in aguardente and sugar and poured straight from the barrel behind the counter. Casa Elefante, the Elephant House trading on Maputo's Avenida 25 de Setembro since 1919, has stayed in the same Hindu family and remains a landmark for capulana cloth opposite the central market. Confeitaria Nacional has operated from the same address on Praça da Figueira since 1829, its neoclassical facade and gilded, mirrored interior little changed since it became official supplier to the Portuguese royal house in 1873. Opened in 1930 near the Baixa, Conserveira de Lisboa still wraps its tins of sardines, mackerel and cod roe by hand in paper printed from decades-old designs. Manuel Tavares has sold cheese, charcuterie, salt cod and vintage port from its narrow Rua da Betesga storefront since 1860, the shelves stacked floor to ceiling behind a marble-topped counter. Opened in the late 19th century near Rossio, Chapelaria Azevedo Rua still fits customers for felt and straw hats from glass display cases that have held stock since the shop's early years, and it is name-checked in a poem by Fernando Pessoa, who bought his hats there.
