London design retail and Glasgow mid-century dealing share this plate because British buyers shop both ways. The Conran Shop grew from Terence Conran's design emporium into a London furniture landmark. Trove gathers mid-century furniture, lighting, ceramics, records in Glasgow. Minima trades mid-century and design furniture with a collector's eye. Vintage pieces cannot be reordered, so measure the stairwell before falling for the sideboard. Two cities, two habits: London sells the new design classic, Glasgow the one that has already lived a life.

Best for Design furniture, lighting and homewares in Belfast
Maven brings furniture and homewares into a former bank on Belfast's Lisburn Road. The setting gives larger pieces room to be seen together, while the selection also includes small objects that do not require furnishing a whole room. Sisters Catherine and Patricia McGinnis founded the business with an interest in design, choosing international brands alongside independent makers. The shop's current range extends from sofas and lighting to cards and candles.
The useful distinction is between Maven as a retailer and the makers it represents. Irish work sits alongside furniture and objects sourced elsewhere, so the location of the shop does not tell you where an individual piece was made. A visit allows those different materials and designs to be compared in person. For a larger purchase, the team offers the opportunity to arrange time for tailored advice, including help with a sofa or dining setup. The current premises are at 364 Lisburn Road, with an accessible entrance and onsite parking described by the shop. Smaller purchases can be browsed without turning the visit into a full interiors consultation.

Farsley, Leeds, Yorkshire / United Kingdom
A destination showroom in a converted Yorkshire mill, with a booked listening lounge and hi-fi furniture built in-house.
Best for A destination showroom in a converted Yorkshire mill
The Spinning Room trades from Sunny Bank Mills, a former textile mill turned cultural hub in Farsley on Leeds' western edge, positioning itself as what founder Paul and his team call "a refreshing take on what a destination HiFi showroom can be." The stock runs the full two-channel chain — turntables, tonearms and cartridges, integrated and separate amplification, speakers and subwoofers, CD transports, DACs, streaming components, cabling and acoustic treatment — from brands including Pro-Ject, Technics, REL Acoustics, Ortofon, Quad and Hegel.
What distinguishes the shop beyond its catalogue is a dedicated listening lounge for booked demonstrations and a house sideline in handmade wooden audio furniture, built by the same team that sells the equipment it will sit under. That combination — an in-house cabinetmaking practice alongside the retail floor — is a genuine specialism rather than a marketing flourish, and it puts The Spinning Room closer to a craft workshop than to a chain electronics counter.
The shop frames its approach explicitly against high-pressure retail: hands-on expertise and personal guidance over a sales script, with demonstrations built around what a customer already owns or listens to rather than a fixed showroom playlist. For a city with no shortage of record shops selling turntables as an accessory to vinyl, The Spinning Room's combination of full-chain component depth, a purpose-built demo lounge and its own furniture workshop marks it as a dedicated hi-fi specialist in the fuller sense.

London / Chelsea
The Conran Shop's Sloane Square flagship presents contemporary furniture and lighting across three floors of a Georgian townhouse in Chelsea. Room settings combine established designs with pieces from its London studio as well as art and accessories for the home. The business began on Fulham Road in 1973, while the current store offers design consultations and collection of selected online purchases.
Best for Contemporary furniture and home design at Sloane Square
The Conran Shop occupies a Georgian townhouse at 16 Sloane Square, with three floors devoted to furniture and the objects used alongside it. Room settings show established designs together with newer pieces from the company's London studio. Artwork and murals form part of the interior. Lighting and home accessories allow smaller purchases alongside larger furnishing decisions.
Sir Terence Conran founded the business on Fulham Road in 1973. That opening belongs to the company's history, rather than the present townhouse, so shoppers planning a visit should use the Sloane Square address. The store sits close to Pavilion Road and its surrounding shops and cafés.
Design consultations are available at the flagship, and a separate trade service supports professional projects. Selected online products can also be collected there when their product pages show that option. Shoppers seeking a particular item can use the website's store-stock information or contact the branch before travelling. This is especially useful when comparing a large furnishing purchase with pieces displayed in the room settings.

Just Fabrics' Burford shop sells furnishing fabrics from regular collections alongside limited designer-clearance lines for home projects. The showroom also carries curtain fittings and sewing supplies, with upholstered furniture available in different fabric choices. Its workroom makes curtains and blinds to measure, giving customers an alternative to sewing the fabric themselves.
Best for Furnishing fabrics and made-to-measure curtains
Just Fabrics' Burford showroom serves people choosing cloth for curtains and upholstery projects in their homes. Regular fabric collections sit alongside designer-clearance stock, which needs a different approach when planning a purchase. A clearance roll may not be replenished, while the regular lines follow a continuing supply arrangement.
The showroom also sells curtain poles and tracks, together with heading tapes and sewing threads. Those supplies make it possible to consider the hanging system while choosing the cloth. Upholstered armchairs provide another route into the fabric range, with choices of covering and style.
Customers who want a finished window treatment can use the workroom's made-to-measure curtain and blind service. That service is distinct from buying fabric to sew at home or taking it to another maker. Before choosing a clearance cloth, establish the quantity needed for the whole project and discuss whether it is available continuously. The business notes that stock may be split across several rolls, so a total quantity alone does not establish one uninterrupted length.

Nottingham, UK
Paul Smith's Nottingham flagship occupies Willoughby House at 20 Low Pavement, a Grade II listed townhouse built in 1738 for the Honourable Rothwell Willoughby. It opened as a shop in 2005. Arranged over five storeys and 2000 square feet, it stands just over 100 yards from Paul's first three-by-three metre shop on Byard Lane. Antique furniture and pieces from Paul's own art collection line the rooms.
Best for Classic British tailoring with playful colour.
Paul Smith opened a three-metre-square shop in Nottingham in 1970, open Fridays and Saturdays only, stocked with what he liked and couldn't find elsewhere. From it grew British fashion's most reliable export and its longest-running independent: Sir Paul still owns his company, still designs, still fills his Covent Garden office with the bicycles, robots and art postcards that famously feed the collections.
The formula he named "classic with a twist" is deceptively hard: proper English tailoring — he trained himself via evening classes and his wife Pauline Denyer's couture training — detonated by one joke: a flash of multi-stripe lining, a naked-lady cuff print, a photographic floral. The signature multi-stripe became one of fashion's most recognizable patterns without a logo in sight.
Japan adopted him at national scale — hundreds of shops — and the Mayfair flagship at Albemarle Street trades behind a famous cast-iron facade. Knighted in 2000, Smith remains menswear's best argument that wit is a form of quality.
Elsley House, High Street
Opened December 2016 in Elsley House, Chipping Campden, this studio builds fabrics, china and stationery around Sam Wilson's lino-cut prints of Cotswold wildlife, sold alongside vintage furniture and a made-to-measure curtain and blind service.
Best for Cotswold lino-cut prints, fabrics, china and homeware
Sam Wilson Studio opened its first shop in December 2016 in Elsley House on Chipping Campden's High Street, built around designer Sam Wilson's own lino-cut printmaking, drawn from the hills and hedgerows around her hillside studio in the nearby hamlet of Saintbury. Those linoprints - birds, botanicals, rural scenes rendered in the bold, textured line typical of the technique - get adapted across fabric, china, and stationery, then made up by specialist UK manufacturers: textiles from Lancashire, ceramics from Stoke-on-Trent. The Chipping Campden shop carries the full range, tea towels through cushions and lamps, alongside vintage furniture pieces that don't come from the print collection at all, and runs a made-to-measure curtain and blind service using the same fabrics sold by the yard. The studio has since added shops in Stow-on-the-Wold (2018) and Bath (2019), but Chipping Campden remains the original and the one built around the made-to-measure trade. The business has picked up regional recognition, named Best Rural Retail Business and Best Rural Creative, Artisan or Crafts Business at the South West Rural Business Awards. It reads as a working print studio with a shopfront attached rather than a homeware retailer that commissions patterns out - the same hand-cut lino blocks that start each design are still Wilson's own.
