Erzsébetváros
An independent English-language bookshop and café selling new and secondhand books. Retained and reverified as open daily in Time Out’s November 2025 Budapest guide; its official Facebook remains the current public destination.
Best for New and secondhand English-language books alongside a café, an independent Budapest fixture.
Massolit Books & Café opened in 2011 in Erzsébetváros, Budapest's historic Jewish Quarter, and has been shaped since by its owner, Judit Pecák, an English-language institution that pairs a used-and-new bookshop with a café. The shop occupies a converted space at Nagy Diófa utca 30 and is arranged around several connected rooms, including a quiet garden courtyard planted with fig trees — an unusual amenity for a central Budapest bookshop and one regularly singled out by visitors. Its shelves mix new titles with a substantial secondhand English-language stock, catering to Budapest's expatriate community, students and travelers as much as to Hungarian readers of English. The café side serves direct-trade coffee, organic tea, and a rotating menu of baked goods — quiches, carrot cake, brownies and other pastries — made on site. Independent listings and travel guides consistently describe it as one of Budapest's enduring English-language literary meeting points, a rarer commodity in a city whose bookshop scene skews heavily toward Hungarian-language stock. It remains open daily, run independently rather than as part of a chain.
