Cheap Monday's roots go back to 2004, when Örjan Andersson and Adam Friberg opened Weekend, a secondhand clothing shop in a Stockholm suburb that, true to its name, was only open on Sundays. Andersson felt there was a gap in the market for jeans that were both fashionable and inexpensive, and developed the shop's own in-house denim style, "Tight," which became the basis for the Cheap Monday brand — instantly recognizable for its skull-and-crossbones logo and skinny cut. The label became one of the defining names of 2000s indie fashion. In March 2008, H&M acquired 60 percent of parent company Fabric Scandinavien AB for 564 million Swedish kronor (roughly $92 million), buying the stake directly from the founders. A decade later, in November 2018, H&M announced it would shut the brand down due to weak sales, with the wind-down completed by June 2019. H&M Group revived Cheap Monday in April 2024, but the relaunched line is sold through its Weekday stores rather than as a standalone Cheap Monday retail chain.
