Alessi

Alessi has operated from Omegna, on Lake Orta in Piedmont, since 1921, evolving from a metal workshop into what may be the world's most famous design factory. Its method is singular: invite the leading architects and designers of each era — Aldo Rossi, Richard Sapper, Michael Graves, Philippe Starck among many — to design everyday household objects, then manufacture them with industrial precision in Italy. The results include some of the most recognizable objects of twentieth-century design: whistling kettles, citrus squeezers, espresso makers, corkscrews that have entered museum collections while remaining in production for ordinary kitchens. That double life — MoMA piece and wedding present — is the whole point. Look for the 9090 espresso maker and Rossi's La Conica among the classics, alongside continuous new commissions. Alessi remains family-connected, Omegna-rooted, and the clearest single demonstration that industrial manufacture and authorship can coexist.

The Omegna factory outlet and the small company museum reward the Lake Orta detour — seeing the objects beside their prototypes explains the house better than any store.
