Aluwihare Heritage Centre

The Aluwihare Heritage Centre carries forward the batik studio built by Ena de Silva, one of Sri Lanka's best-documented batik artists. Wikipedia's own record of her career traces the line directly: de Silva founded a design firm in Colombo in 1960 with Laki Senanayake, Reggie Siriwardena and her son, established the Matale Heritage Centre in 1964 to produce batik, and in 1982 moved the operation into her father's ancestral home in Aluwihare, converting it into a heritage center that also taught carpentry, needlework and brass-founding alongside batik.

After de Silva's death in 2015, the workshop was renamed the Aluwihare Heritage Centre in honor of her and her family's home village, and per the Hong Kong M+ museum's own maker profile — which holds 23 of the center's textile objects in its collection and lists the center as "established 2017" and "active Matale" — the organization continues to operate from that same site. Sri Lanka’s Sunday Times has described artisans at the centre continuing to work from de Silva’s design archive, selecting patterns for ongoing batik and embroidery production. Because that article is not currently available for direct inspection, the museum record—not the press account—remains the firmer basis for the entry.

The centre’s own storefront is currently unreachable, so current retail access and day-to-day visitor arrangements should be confirmed before travelling. What can be stated confidently is narrower: this is a named Matale heritage-craft organisation with a museum-documented collection and a direct line to Ena de Silva’s historically significant batik studio. Treat it as a research-led heritage stop, not a guaranteed walk-in shop.
