Thomas Church and his sons founded their firm in Northampton in 1873, in the town that has been England's shoemaking capital for centuries, and Church's remains one of its defining names. The shoes are Goodyear-welted in Northampton through the traditional eight-week, two-hundred-plus-operation process — construction that allows repeated resoling and gives English shoes their famous longevity. Church's codified the polished English wardrobe: the Consul captoe oxford, the Chetwynd brogue, the Shanghai and custom-grade lines, all on lasts that have dressed the City, the professions, and at least one cinematic James Bond. Under Prada-group ownership the house has kept production at home.
