Deep Vellum Books

Deep Vellum Books is the storefront and headquarters of Deep Vellum Books & Publishing, a nonprofit literary arts organization at 3000 Commerce Street in Deep Ellum, Dallas. Will Evans founded Deep Vellum in 2013. He had found that Dallas readers had few places to talk about books and global literature. The name plays on the historic district Deep Ellum and on vellum, the thick parchment once used for fine books. In its first five years the press published 90 works in translation and hosted dozens of literary events. It has since become the largest publisher of translated literature in the United States. Seven imprints include Dalkey Archive Press, acquired in 2020, and the backlist holds more than 1,500 titles from over 100 countries. The shop stocks everything the press publishes together with a selection of literary fiction and nonfiction and poetry from independent publishers. It calls itself Texas's normalest bookstore and welcomes anyone who would like to read. The Dallas Morning News reported in 2026 on a listing by Condé Nast Traveler. That magazine had included the store on its list of independent bookstores in America. The same report noted that Mircea Cărtărescu's Solenoid, a Deep Vellum title, reached the International Booker Prize longlist in 2025.
