Fábrica Coffee Roasters

Fábrica Coffee Roasters is billed as Portugal's first specialty coffee roaster, operating since 2015 in a country where, as in much of southern Europe, dark-roast tradition had left little room for a lighter, origin-focused style before Fábrica entered the market. The roasting happens on-site in Lisbon, and the coffee is bought through direct trade partnerships with producers rather than through intermediary brokers.

Fábrica runs two retail cafés in Lisbon, giving it two physical points where the on-site roasted coffee reaches customers directly, and it also offers customizable monthly subscription boxes, letting customers set their own recurring selection rather than receiving a fixed rotation.

Being first into a national category carries a specific kind of responsibility — there was no existing Portuguese specialty-coffee audience to serve, only one to build — and Fábrica's combination of on-site Lisbon roasting, direct trade sourcing, two cafés, and a customizable subscription model reflects an operation built to both introduce and sustain that category rather than just launch it.
