John Derian Company was established in 1989, a few years after John Derian began a one-man decoupage business in Boston. He moved to New York in the early 1990s and hired a team of artisans as orders grew. His first shop opened in 1995 on East 2nd Street in the East Village. That quiet block became his creative hub. The company now runs three shops there at numbers 6, 8 and 10, with a seasonal store in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The decoupage is still made by hand in the New York studio by a small staff of artisans. They cut and paste imagery from Derian's collection of 18th and 19th century prints and lithographs onto glass plates and trays, with bowls and paperweights. In 2009 he added postcards, gift tags and tote bags to complement the decoupage line. Since 2011 his imagery has appeared on the white tableware of Astier de Villatte, and since 2018 on fabrics and wallpapers made with Designers Guild. A collaboration with Target began in 2010. One with Artisan Papergoods in 2020 brought puzzles and notebooks, with notepads. A candle with LAFCO New York followed in 2018. The shops also carry holiday objects from Ino Schaller, a German family business founded in 1894. A wall calendar marks each month with blooms from the print archive.
