Kappertz Schirme (Hut- und Schirmmoden Adrion)

The business at Kölner Straße 74 in Leverkusen-Opladen began in 1912, when Gustav Adrion started going door to door collecting broken umbrellas, repairing them by hand, and bringing them back to their owners. Christian Kappertz took the business over from Adrion in 1968, and it still trades under the older name, Hut- und Schirmmoden Adrion, alongside Kappertz's own Schirmmoden Fabrikation — a hat-and-umbrella specialty house now well past its 112th year.

Umbrellas are still made in the shop's own workshop in traditional handwork, cut to customer wishes: fabric is hand-cut and sewn, then applied by hand to a prepared frame built to the customer's measurements, in polyester, satin or nylon canopy fabric with hemmed edges, over understocks in 10mm or 14mm steel, wood, or fiberglass, finished with grips in natural woods like chestnut in derby, round-hook or straight styles. The workshop makes support umbrellas, long stick umbrellas, and shoulder umbrellas alongside standard designs, and still repairs umbrellas it didn't make.

Beyond umbrellas, the same shop sells and makes hats and caps and supplies shooting-club regalia — a small-town German specialty trade that has kept its founding family-workshop model for over a century after a mender's door-to-door round started it.
