LOFT traces its origins to the 1987 opening of the LOFT Annex at Seibu Shibuya, where the company developed an edited alternative to conventional supplies stores. Its "Showcase of Time" concept still explains the mix: practical objects appear beside trend-led discoveries, and browsing forms part of the store's stated purpose rather than simply a route to a predetermined purchase. The wider assortment spans stationery and planners. Writing tools form another category. Cosmetics and personal-care goods sit beside tableware and kitchenware, while interior accessories and travel goods widen the selection. Gifts extend it again. That breadth allows several everyday Japanese product categories to be compared under one roof. The company classifies Shibuya as a large store and has stated that the branch will continue after Seibu Shibuya's announced September 2026 closure. Shibuya LOFT therefore remains part of the retailer's original Shibuya story rather than an interchangeable location in the national chain.
