Metzgerei Gassner

Metzgerei Gassner has been a Munich butcher shop since 1937, when Engelbert Gassner, a journeyman butcher from Kallmunz in the Upper Palatinate, opened it with his wife Katharina in the Schwabing district. The business survived the difficult wartime years on Haimhauserstrasse before the postwar currency reform allowed real growth; a second-generation Engelbert Gassner Jr. then expanded the operation, and it relocated in 1992-93 to a 3,000-square-metre site on Zenettistrasse in Munich's former cattle-market (Viehhof) district, where it still operates.

A third generation, Andreas Gassner, now runs the company with roughly 40 employees, serving wholesale customers, restaurants, and direct retail customers across Bavaria. The house specializes in typically South German sausage products (typisch suddeutsche Wurstwaren) and traditional Bavarian bratwurst made to old family recipes, alongside ham and roasted meats.

The company's own account of its history includes the hard years, not just the growth: it describes the wartime period as difficult, with the shop kept running under constrained conditions, and only picking back up with West Germany's postwar currency reform. Staffing grew from the founding couple to 25 employees by 1991, before the 1992-93 move to the larger Zenettistrasse site enabled the operation's current scale.

A near-90-year, three-generation run at the same trade in the same city gives Metzgerei Gassner a genuine claim to Bavarian Metzgerei tradition, distinct from Munich's larger sausage-making industrial names — the business remains family-owned and still describes itself as a Traditionsmetzgerei (traditional butcher shop) rather than a manufacturer.
