Founder Meredith Lusk has made Moonrise Jewelry by hand beside the Chesapeake Bay since 2002, working with a team of local women in the studio at 325 Mason Avenue in Cape Charles. Meredith Lusk began selling seashell sculptures in her father's drugstore at the age of eight, on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay. A self-taught designer, she has built Moonrise Jewelry from the ground up since 2002. The name comes from a full moon rising over the Barrier Islands of Virginia. From the start she trained local women to assist with production. Every piece is still handmade in the studio on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The signature material is Fish Leather, an exotic leather made from by-products of the Icelandic fishing industry, dyed in a range of colors for earrings and cuffs and men's pieces. Real Orchid Blossoms and freshwater pearls appear alongside. In 2005 Meryl Streep named the company a Top Product Pick in her Green Guide. The designs later appeared in Lucky magazine and on NBC's Today Show. A Leg Up endorsement from Spanx founder Sara Blakely in 2012 helped open the retail store in Cape Charles. The studio expanded for new employees and wholesale growth. The shop at 325 Mason Avenue also carries vintage and estate fine jewelry. InStore magazine and Southern Living have each listed it among their boutique picks.
