What Omotesando Hills is known for

Ando Tadao’s spiral retail monument — a six-storey atrium whose slope follows Omotesando Avenue and whose low-rise form meets the zelkova-lined streetscape, with shops arranged along the ramp.

Omotesando Hills was created from the redevelopment of 旧同潤会青山アパート and opened on 2006年2月11日. The complex occupies a 250-metre frontage along 表参道, roughly one quarter of the street between 表参道駅 and 明治神宮. Its programme combines about 100 specialist shops with 38 residences and parking for 182 cars across six floors above ground and six below. Inside the main building, a six-level atrium is wrapped by a 700-metre spiral slope. The slope follows the avenue's gradient at approximately three degrees, turning circulation into the central architectural device. A grand staircase descends through the atrium to スペースオー, an event area of about 550 square metres. Outside, the 250-metre ブライトアップウォール uses LED lighting to form part of the night streetscape. These measurements explain why Omotesando Hills functions as more than a conventional shopping centre. Mori Building describes it as a cultural-commercial facility that joins fashion and art events to the character of 表参道. The long frontage and sloping interior route support a mixed residential-retail programme. These are the specific elements that give the project its urban role.
