Sapumal Industries

Sapumal Industries was established in 1977 as a family-owned business on Kandy Road in Mawanella, Sri Lanka, describing itself as the island's pioneer manufacturer of incense sticks and incense powder. Close to five decades later it remains family-run, having grown into what it calls the country's leading and fastest-growing producer in the category, holding ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certification for its manufacturing and environmental processes.

The company's core line covers incense sticks, incense powder, and sambrani (resin incense burned on charcoal, common to South Asian devotional practice), made through its own research and development laboratory and press facilities rather than outsourced production. It has diversified over the years into air fresheners, perfumes, and safety wax matches, and operates two subsidiary companies alongside the original Mawanella works.

Distribution runs across all of Sri Lanka's provinces as well as export markets, making Sapumal one of the more established names supplying the island's own incense-burning tradition — a market distinct from, but adjacent to, the Indian agarbatti trade that supplies much of South Asia. Its near-half-century of continuous operation from the same Mawanella base underlines a company built on manufacturing scale rather than a single retail identity.
